Approximately 1-2 million men and boys suffer from eating disorders and are frequently overlooked in their struggles because eating disorders are traditionally viewed as a woman’s disease.2 Therefore, men and boys face incredible odds of getting treatment and experiencing recovery. McCallum Place in St. Louis is the only eating disorder treatment center in Missouri that accepts boys for eating disorder treatment.
Kimberli McCallum, MD, CEDS, FAPA is the CEO, Medical Director and Founder of McCallum Place Eating Disorder Centers and is committed to providing quality, accessible care for males in a residential setting. Dr. McCallum is board certified in adult, child and adolescent psychiatry and contributes her expertise and experience to the treatment of males. “At McCallum Place we have treated men and boys in our partial hospital setting for some time now. Men and boys that are pre-adolescent and older can now receive medical and psychiatric care along with counseling and nutrition in a home like setting at McCallum Place, a nationally acclaimed treatment center.
This treatment will not only be available to men with a general eating disorder but will also extend to males in The Victory Program at McCallum Place, a program designed specifically for elite athletes who are caught in the cycle of disordered eating. “To be able to offer residential treatment to males, and specifically male athletes with eating disorders, means we can offer very specialized care for a group of men and boys who are at a high risk, yet rarely get treatment.” said Dr. McCallum.
In fact, male athletes, especially those who participate in individual sports, judged sports and sports that factor in weight classes are more susceptible to eating disorders than the general population1. Now that The Victory Program at McCallum Place can offer residential care for males these athletes can take full advantage of treatment and begin the process of recovery, reestablish their health and return to their sport with a better perspective on their body, sport and nutrition.
We are also pleased to offer a women’s only residence for all female patients who prefer a gender specific option. The residential facility for males is located at McCallum Place in St. Louis, Missouri. Offering evidence based treatment in a safe and secure environment to ensure effective restoration of health.
