A Self-Test for Eating Disorders

There is no single quiz or test than can diagnose eating disorders as specific signs and symptoms can vary with each individual. However, eating disorders do have a clear effect on thought and behavior patterns making it possible to develop questions that may help you determine if you are at high risk for developing or are indeed struggling with an eating disorder. The following is a brief quiz designed to help you decide if you may have an eating disorder.

When answering questions, it is important to be honest and straightforward. If you find yourself saying “Yes” to several of the questions, you may be suffering from an eating disorder and should contact McCallum Place Eating Disorder Centers to arrange for a free and confidential consultation. If that feels too overwhelming you may want to first speak with someone you trust, such as a parent, teacher, therapist, doctor, or close friend.

Eating Disorder Quiz – Feelings & Thoughts

  1. Do you consider yourself a perfectionist, someone who always wants to be in control, and/or an overachiever?
  2. Do you often seek or desire acceptance and approval from other people and/or find that you have a hard time saying “no”?
  3. Do you often criticize your small faults and/or frequently question your judgments or actions?
  4. Do you think that your life would be better and/or people would like you more if you were thinner?
  5. Do you frequently find yourself comparing your physical appearance and weight to others, including friends, strangers, models, or actors, and wishing to be as thin as they are?
  6. Do family members and friends often express concern for your weight loss or gain, your appearance, and/or your eating habits?
  7. Do you feel that you are overweight or fat even though others have said that you are not?
  8. Do you suffer from depression or anxiety and find that your own problems are overwhelming and difficult to handle?

Eating Disorder Quiz – Behaviors

  1. Do you self-starve, restrict food, or compulsively exercise when you are feeling lonely, badly about yourself, or other emotional pressures?
  2. Do you experience frequent uncontrollable bingeing followed by purging episodes where you use self-induced vomiting, laxative abuse, fasting, or compulsive exercising to purge excess calories?
  3. Do eating, self-starving, and/or bingeing and purging behaviors help you to feel comforted, relieved, or more in control?
  4. Do you feel guilty and/or as though you have instantly gained weight after a binge, snack, or meal?
  5. Do you use self-starvation, purging, diet pills, laxatives, diuretics, and/or obsessive exercise as a way to attempt to lose weight?
  6. Do you weigh yourself often or compulsively and does the number on your scale dictate your mood and self-worth for the day?
  7. Are you constantly “on a diet” and/or counting calories and fat grams?
  8. Are you secretive about your eating practices, do you think they are abnormal, and/or do you lie about eating behaviors to others?

Eating Disorder Quiz – Physical Signs

  1. Do you frequently feel extremely cold and/or experience tingling or numbness in your hands or feet?
  2. Do you find that you are unexpectedly and unrealistically tired following relatively low energy activities, such as climbing stairs and/or do you often find yourself fatigued?
  3. Do you experience frequent fainting spells, blackouts, dizziness, headaches or lightheadedness, numbness in the face or other parts of the body, mood swings, low blood pressure, low body temperature, menstrual cycle irregularity, irritability, lack of ability to concentrate, blurred vision, constipation, and/or stomach cramping?

What to Do After the Eating Disorder Quiz

After taking this quiz, if you feel that many of the above statements are true it is important that you reach out to a health care provider who treats individuals with eating disorders as soon as possible. Admitting that you need help and contacting us or your health care provider are both very important steps in the recovery process.
