How Eating Disorder Support Groups Facilitate and Promote Recovery

Support Groups at McCallum Place

Eating disorder support groups provide a place for people suffering from eating disorders to come together, share stories, provide feedback and support, and learn how to overcome their disorder. Eating Disorder Support Groups can be an important supplement to any type of outpatient eating disorder treatment. Family Focused eating disorder support groups can also help the parents and family members of patients undergoing eating disorder treatment.

If you are interested in finding eating disorder support groups in your area, McCallum Place a leading eating disorder treatment center, can help. McCallum Place offers several outpatient eating disorder support groups for individuals suffering from eating disorders including anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

Eating Disorder Support Groups Before Eating Disorder Treatment

Attending an eating disorder support group prior to receiving additional eating disorder treatment or therapy can help individuals begin the recovery process. Additionally, eating disorder support groups offer the following benefits to individuals suffering from eating disorders and not currently receiving treatment:

  • Attending eating disorder support groups help the individuals develop the courage to seek additional therapy in order to overcome their disorder.
  • Because these support groups allow individuals to share stories and feelings with each other, they may help individuals refusing to admit that they are suffering from a serious medical condition realize that they need help.
  • For some individuals with eating disorders, support groups can be enough to overcome the eating disorder without the need for additional treatment. Additionally, for those who cannot afford professional therapy or long-term treatment, eating disorder support groups may help teach important skills and methods for overcoming the eating disorder.

Eating Disorder Support Groups During Eating Disorder Treatment

Eating disorder support groups offer a number of benefits and advantages when used as a supplement to professional eating disorder treatment and therapy. These benefits include:

  • Forming lasting friendships with other individuals overcoming eating disorders
  • Motivating individuals to continue treatment
  • Sharing stories that help encourage and support others
  • Helping individuals feel they are not alone in their struggle
