McCallum Place Eating Disorder Centers Announce New Pre-Adolescent Unit for Children Ages 6-12 Years

Intensive Pre-Adolescent Eating Disorder Treatment Program with Child Specialists

ST. LOUIS, MO – May 17, 2016–McCallum Place Eating Disorder Centers’ Founder, Dr. Kimberli McCallum, MD, FAPA, CEDS, today announced a new Pre-Adolescent Unit that will expand access to eating disorder treatment specifically for children from ages 6 – 12 years. The program offered at the St. Louis location will provide residential and partial hospitalization services for up to 12 patients at a time beginning July of 2016.

“The new Pre-Adolescent Unit at McCallum Place will be one of the very few residential eating disorder treatment centers in the nation offering specialized services for this underserved population,” stated Dr. Lynn Stark, DNP, APRN, PMHCNS and CEO at McCallum Place. The program provides intensive treatment in a medically supervised, safe and structured environment for children ages 6-12 years old. McCallum Place has medical doctors and board certificated child psychiatrists to bring specialized quality care to pre-adolescent patients.

Thirty-Two percent of McCallum Place patients report eating disorder onset prior to age 12. Early intervention and compassionate informed parent involvement is encouraged and provides the best chance for full recovery. Nurturing treatment in children is modified with the pre-adolescent context and brain development in mind. Children admitted to the program will also be able to work with tutors to continue with school. The expansion answers a need and increases McCallum Place’s offering as eating disorder specialists.
