More About Our Various Group Therapies
Group therapy is a form of eating disorder treatment that provides an opportunity for a deeper understanding of self and others. Restrictive eating and binging and purging can be a way to communicate internal distress. Patients suffering from anorexia, bulimia, or other eating disorders, can all work together to overcome their fears and anxiety and to learn the healing, therapeutic value of group work.
Group Fitness Therapy
Our fitness groups allow patients to experience the physical and psychological benefits of exercise. We offer many options to patients once medically stable and at a healthy weight including: Fitness training, daily walks, yoga, NIA, and strength training with a personal trainer. Additionally, fun and unique fitness outings off campus take place weekly where patients participate in various forms of physical activity.
What is NIA and how does it help patients at McCallum Place?
"The Nia Technique uses the natural wisdom of the human body as the basis for it's powerful cardiovascular workout that stands apart from all other fitness techniques to deliver a new perception of exercise and to increase self acceptance, joy in the body and a healthy body image. With the combination of dance arts, martial arts and healing arts, The Nia Technique builds personal power and inner strength as the 52 fun moves are done mindfully and with non-judgment, accompanied by unique world music. The eating disorder patient benefits from practicing The Nia Technique by becoming aware of pleasure in the body and by appreciating their own unique body --their own unique self--as they become more aware of the relationship between the healthy mind and the healthy body." -Reneigh DeBoer, Nia Blue Belt Group Instructor
Group Dance & Movement Therapy
Dance therapy helps patients reconnect with their feelings and communicate on another level. Movement encourages individuals to step outside of their mind and reclaim their bodies, giving them courage to find beauty and freedom in their own rhythms.
Group Art Therapy
Art therapy allows patients to express themselves creatively, providing another window into each individual and a different way to promote understanding and communication.
Meal Therapy
Meal therapy, nutrition, and post-meal groups are led by staff, therapists and dietitians. Staff and patients plan, eat, and review meals as a group. Patients begin to face and overcome their fear of eating with supportive feedback and encouragement before, during, and after each meal. Self-portioning, restaurant outings, and cooking classes are offered to help patients build confidence in eating away from treatment.
Pet Assisted Therapy
Our team of Golden Retrievers lead our pet assisted therapy, helping patients to connect, play, and relax after a week of intensive individual and group work.
Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy in the City… Our patients have the best of many types of treatment settings at McCallum Place
Our clients enjoy privacy, security, and the
healing attributes rural settings can offer...PLUS the medical care and expertise of an inpatient or hospital unit...
AND without compromising daily opportunities to experience the benefits of a real-life, centrally located, and practical environment...
Equine-assisted psychotherapy group in addition to our weekly Canine Pet Therapy to specifically focus on helping our patients that are medically stable
work on elements of recovery such as confrontation, assertiveness, and boundaries.
Treatment Goals
McCallum Place strives to help individuals build the confidence and skills necessary to let go of their patterns of restrictive eating, purging, and compulsive exercise. Our protocols are designed to help patients restore weight minimize relapse with restricting, binge eating, vomiting, and/or compulsive exercise. Our goal is to empower each patient to develop the capacity to act from a state of mindfulness. When in wise mind a person is able to change how food and body image is used to express underlying emotional needs and concerns. Our individual psychotherapy sessions allow for in-depth exploration and group work helps integrate newly acquired skills. We also encourage our patients to practice weight maintenance and flexible eating prior to discharge. When possible, a gradual, flexible step-down program is recommended to ease the transition back to independent living. We give individuals suffering from eating disorders, including anorexia and bulimia, the power to manage the fears associated with new meal expectations and changes in body size.
