Updated at January 27, 2010 13:21Eating disorders are mental illnesses, but they increasingly cause serious physical problems and even death. Hospitalizations for complications from eating disorders increased by nearly 20 percent between 1999 and 2006, according to a recent report from the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Patients with anorexia, bulimia and other eating disorders are treated for conditions ranging from dehydration, anemia and kidney failure to cardiac and intestinal problems caused by severe malnutrition.
